Started From the Bottom, Still Broke: Budgeting 101

I feel like my life is just like the song, “Started from the bottom, now we’re here”. Unfortunately, unlike the song, I’m still broke. But I am finding ways to better manage my money, and to live more frugally.

I will start with some budgeting basics. Mind you, I had absolutely no concept of what a budget even was until recently. I was spending willie-nillie, not really caring where my money went. A few weeks ago, I decided to hop on Pinterest to gain some ideas and gather information.

First things first, you will need to calculate exactly how much money you have to work with each week or each month. The easiest way to do this is to take your check and multiply it by four (or by two if paid bi-weekly). This will give you your total earnings for the month.

The next thing you will need to do is add up how much money will need to be spent on bills and living expenses. This will include things such as rent (or mortgage), utilities, gas, groceries, etc.

After you deduct those things from your total earnings for the month, you will know exactly how much extra money you have to work with.

Having a budget will allow you to see exactly how much money you are spending each month, and will allow you to decide what things aren’t needed and which areas to cut back in.
